Data licences in plain English

These licences sit alongside the Terms of Service & Data License and, for API plans, the API Terms. If they differ, the Terms of Service apply.

Standard licence

Applies to: Cars ($499), Trucks ($399), Motorcycles ($299), Complete bundle ($999), Market prices export ($199), API Starter and API Pro.

1. What you may do

Use the data inside your own business: analysis, reporting, research, pricing and internal tools.
Use the data to power your own apps, websites and services. Your users may see individual values (for example a car's power or dimensions) as part of your product.
Keep copies on your own systems and back them up, for as long as you use them under this licence.
Combine the data with your own data and keep what you create from it (aggregates, statistics, models trained on it for your own use).

2. What you may not do

Resell, sublicense, give away or redistribute the data, in whole or in a substantial part.
Provide the data as a dataset to others: no downloads, exports, bulk API endpoints, public repositories or file shares that let someone obtain the data itself.
Use the data to build a competing car-data product or a model that can reproduce it.
Share it with other companies in your group unless we agreed in writing.
Remove or alter notices, or the identifiers that make your copy traceable.

3. Who it is for

The licence is for the buyer (the company or person that paid) and its employees and contractors working for it. It is non-exclusive, worldwide and cannot be transferred.

4. Audit

Once a year, or at any time we have a reasonable suspicion of misuse, we may ask you to confirm in writing how and where the data is used. If we have evidence that the data has been redistributed, you will cooperate in good faith to find and stop it. We will give reasonable notice and keep anything we learn confidential.

5. If the licence is broken

We may end the licence. You must then stop using and delete the data. The Terms of Service set out the further remedies, including damages.

6. "As is", no warranty

The data is provided "as is" and "as available", with all faults. To the fullest extent the law allows, we give no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement.

7. No liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any damages of any kind: direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special or punitive, or for any loss of profits, revenue, business, goodwill or data, arising from or related to the data, its use, or your inability to use it, however caused and even if we were told such damage was possible.

Where the law does not allow our liability to be excluded, our total liability for all claims together is capped at the amount you paid us for the product concerned (for API plans: in the 12 months before the claim). Nothing in this licence excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited, such as liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

8. Refunds

Datasets are digital goods delivered immediately, so purchases are final once the download link has been issued, except for non-delivery or a file that is unusable, reported within 7 days (Terms of Service, section 8). Subscription fees are not refunded for the current period.

Resale licence

Applies to: Full dataset + Resale licence ($7,500 one-time).

1. What you may do

Everything the Standard licence allows.
Resell, sublicense and redistribute the data, as is or modified, to your own customers.
Include the data in your own products and datasets, including ones you sell, and offer it through your own API or downloads.

2. Conditions

Keep the attribution notice. Every copy or file you distribute that contains a substantial part of the data must include the notice below (the NOTICE.txt in your download). Your own product pages do not need to show it.
No claim of authorship. You may say you distribute or include CarsDataset data. You may not say you created or compiled the data yourself, or that it is endorsed by us.
Your customers get no more rights than you have. You may not give them the right to resell the data on their own.
The licence is for the buyer and cannot be transferred or assigned without our written consent.

3. "As is", no warranty

The data is provided "as is" and "as available", with all faults. To the fullest extent the law allows, we give no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, timeliness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. You are responsible for anything you promise your own customers about the data.

4. No liability, and your responsibility for redistribution

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any damages of any kind: direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special or punitive, or for lost profits, revenue, business, goodwill or data, arising from or related to the data, its use, your inability to use it, or its resale or redistribution by you or anyone downstream.

You alone are responsible for your customers and for how you redistribute the data. You will defend and indemnify us (Knitted Logic and its owner) against any claim, loss, damage or cost, including reasonable legal fees, brought by your customers or any third party that arises from your resale, redistribution or products, or from your breach of this licence.

Where the law does not allow our liability to be excluded, our total liability for all claims together is capped at the amount you paid for this licence ($7,500). Nothing in this licence excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited, such as liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

5. Updates

Includes 12 months of updates: quarterly refreshes (4 per year), delivered by email. Data you received before the 12 months end stays licensed to you.

6. Ending the licence

If you materially break these conditions and do not fix it within 30 days of our notice, we may end the licence. Copies your customers already received under its terms remain licensed to them.

Updates

We refresh the dataset files quarterly.

Cars and Complete bundle: 2 quarterly refreshes of the cars dataset in the first 6 months.
Full dataset + Resale licence: 12 months of quarterly refreshes (4 per year).
Trucks, Motorcycles and Market prices: the snapshot current at purchase.
API plans always query the live database.

Traceable copies

Every downloaded file is unique to its buyer, with marks that do not affect normal use, so that a copy found elsewhere can be traced back to the purchase it came from.
